You have to listen to somebody all the time, take orders all the time." "It's just not home." When a boy can't make it at Okeechobee, Brown says, "there's no sense kicking a dead horse. If we feel we're not making progress with the boy, if he's a security risk, if he's messing up. we'll transfer him." at Trenton, a 3-year-old coed institute where the staff outnumbers the residents and where some of Florida's worst children end up.
Or he could go into one of the Eckerd camps. DYS contracts for two of these camps with a foundation endowed by drugstore owner Jack Eckerd. There, two counselors will take a group of 10 boys out into the wilderness to build their own housing and sanitation systems, cook their own food and go to school around a campfire. But for the kids who don't have to go that far, "rehabilitation really takes place in the community," Brown says. "I think we do a big part in turning the kid around, making him aware of his problems.
But I think the people in the community the counselors, the school teachers have got to do more because that's where the problem DYS is experimenting with a new program in the community called intensive group counseling, aimed at the child who has been to a training school two or three times. a program that started only in October and has so far been successful eight of nine times, according to the DYS. intensive group is set up for the hard core juvenile delinquent," says DYS counselor Don Stupica, who handles the West Palm Beach group. The boys meet for at least an hour and a half five times a week and their parents meet for a weekly session. If a boy messes up misses group, misses school, gets into further trouble with the law he is yanked back into a training school.
"This group gives you rules to go by," says one 13-year-old participant. "If you can go by these rules you can go by any rules in the outside world." "I feel in the long run it's going to help me face life," says a 16-year-old with a history of purse-snatchings and auto theft. "Since got into group I have more responsibility than I ever had.
