NYC civil service exam: Here are the salaries for positions open in August (2024)

The New York City civil service exam schedule is open for August, and some jobs pay more than others.

The application period for exams opened Aug. 7.

Exam applications currently open include: architect; assistant civil engineer; civil engineering intern; correction officer; police administrative aide; special officer; special officer (NYC H+H); and traffic enforcement agent.

Open, competitive, computer-based tests are administered throughout each month for various positions. If you meet the basic requirements of the job, you can apply for your exam online at Online Application System (OASys) or at one of the Computer-Based Testing and Application Centers (CTAC).

Most exams have a deadline of Aug. 27.

The deadline is Sept. 27 for correction officer, and the deadline is Oct. 11 for traffic enforcement agent.

Additionally, the application for call center representative is open through Aug. 27, and the application for environmental police officer is open until Aug. 30. Applications for police officer remain open through Sept. 25.

Here are the starting salaries, deadlines and job descriptions for each career, according to the city.

Architect

Salary: $76,262

Application deadline: Aug. 27

Job description: At Assignment Level 1: Architects, under general supervision, perform responsible supervisory work, or difficult and responsible work in architecture. They perform the usual duties as a head of a major architectural design section, or the equivalent, plan, assign and review the work of subordinates, prepare progress reports, and may represent an agency, department head, or top-level architectural or engineering officer or employee in relations with City agencies and departments, contractors and their representatives, consultants, and the general public; engage in, or supervise the conduct of, complex and important research, investigations, studies or examinations related to the architectural functions and activities of a department or agency; prepare, or supervise the preparation of, drawings related to the architectural plan for major projects for the construction, remodeling or repair of public works, structures or installations; supervise the preparation of specifications, cost estimates and estimates of quantities; evaluate bids, contractors and consultants’ performance to recommend award of contracts for architectural projects; make interpretative detail sketches or layouts of intricate or fundamental portions or aspects of the architectural plan as proposed or adopted; prepare, or supervise the preparation of, complete or final analyses of the spatial organization and efficient utilization of major sites and structures, or of the functional arrangement of interior units, utilities and appurtenances; develop designs of exteriors, facades, ornamental work, sculpture, grounds and walks, etc., of a complex nature; participate in the development of major proposals for the acquisition, disposition, or the public or private use of City property, or for the conduct of surveys, or for the construction, operation or maintenance of public works, plants or structures; may sign and seal architectural and other official documents when assigned in writing; and may operate a motor vehicle.

Assistant civil engineer

Salary: $64,242

Job description: Assistant Civil Engineers, under supervision, perform civil engineering work of moderate difficulty and responsibility. They supervise a small squad, unit or group engaged in the performance of work in design, construction supervision, inspection and materials testing, or drafting and tracing; engage in research, investigation, or studies related to the engineering functions or activities of a department or agency; produce designs using Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software and other software in accordance with agency requirements; develop drawings, write specifications and prepare estimates of quantities; check shop drawings; participate in field surveys as chief of survey party or in other capacities; participate in inspection operations by observing, checking and certifying the installation of materials and equipment, attest to equipment performance and tests of materials; review or examine plans for the construction, demolition or alteration of structures to comply with the provisions of law, rule or regulation; may operate motor vehicles.

Call center representative

Salary: $39,486

Application deadline: Aug. 27

Job description: Call Center Representatives, under supervision, in the Office of Technology and Innovation (OTI) New York City 24-hour 3-1-1 Call Center, provide a single point of contact for all non-emergency City services utilizing state-of-the-art telephone and interactive computer systems, respond to phone inquiries from the public, provide customer service and information to callers, take complaints and service requests and forward them for further action; enter inquiries, complaints and requests into appropriate computer systems, and perform related clerical and computer support work.

Civil engineering intern

Salary: $57,866

Application deadline: Aug. 27

Job description: Civil Engineering Interns under direct supervision of Managers or Civil Engineers, perform elementary civil engineering work in the field, office, or laboratory, and receive training in civil engineering work of moderate difficulty and responsibility on the Assistant Civil Engineer level. The work and training may be in one or more of the following engineering areas: scope development, design, drafting, specifications, estimating, scheduling, construction, inspection, operations, maintenance. Civil Engineering Interns may prepare associated reports and correspondence and maintain records; and may drive a motor vehicle in the performance of assigned duties

Correction officer

Salary: $52,804

Application deadline: Sept. 27

Job description: Correction Officers, under supervision, maintain security and are responsible for the care, custody, control, job training and work performance of sentenced and detained inmates within New York City correctional facilities. They supervise inmate meals, visits, recreational programs, and other congregate activities; inspect assigned areas for conditions which threaten safety and security; conduct searches in order to detect contraband; complete forms and reports; maintain appropriate log books; communicate with other area Correction Officers to exchange pertinent information; issue verbal orders, announcements and explanations to inmates; observe inmates and make recommendations concerning medical and/or psychiatric referrals; safeguard Department supplies and equipment; escort inmates within and outside of the facility including their transportation in Departmental vehicles; respond to unusual incidents and disturbances; enforce security procedures in accordance with Department guidelines; request medical assistance for inmates when necessary; count and verify the number of inmates present in assigned areas; verify identification of inmates; supervise inmates of either sex; operate a motor vehicle; and perform related work.

Environmental police officer

Salary: $49,210 per annum for the first 26 weeks and $56,454 after the first 26 weeks.

Job description: Environmental Police Officers perform and supervise staff performing duties involved in protecting the watershed areas, water supply systems and installations maintained by the Department of Environmental Protection of the City of New York; enforce the City’s Watershed Rules and Regulations and other laws; and perform special duties or assignments as may be directed by superior officers. Environmental Police Officers operate motor vehicles and may perform aerial reconnaissance.

Police administrative aide

Salary: $40,957

Application deadline: Aug. 27

Job description: Police Administrative Aides, under supervision, with some latitude for independent action, initiative or decision, perform responsible and difficult clerical, typing, word processing and data entry tasks in a police station or other department unit, command or office. They perform administrative work of moderate difficulty involving the handling of confidential and other information and material; refer members of the public who ask for assistance to the appropriate City agency; utilize manual and automated office systems; type records, reports, forms and schedules; review and verify written information; receive, send, separate and distribute mail; obtain from and transmit information to the public or members of the police department; occasionally perform cashier or messenger duties.

Police officer

Salary: $53,790

Application deadline: Sept. 25

Job description: Police Officers perform general police duties and related work in the New York City Police Department including connecting and building relationships with the community. They patrol an assigned area on foot or in a vehicle to prevent crime; apprehend crime suspects; intervene in various situations involving crimes in progress, aided cases, complaints, emotionally disturbed persons, etc.; respond to and investigate vehicular accidents; investigate specific offenses; interact with prisoners; operate and maintain patrol vehicles; issue summonses; obtain information regarding incidents by interviewing witnesses, victims, and/or complainants; safeguard and voucher found, seized or recovered property; provide information to the public; handle situations involving maltreated, abused, or missing children; interact with juveniles; may be assigned to crowd control for large-scale events such as demonstrations, rallies and parades; prepare forms and reports; and testify in court.

Special officer

Salary: $38,074

Job description: Special Officers under supervision, perform Special Officer work of ordinary difficulty and responsibility relating to physical security, safety, loss prevention and maintenance of order. They patrol designated areas of public buildings, other facilities, and surrounding areas to maintain order, preserve the peace, and safeguard life and property against fire, vandalism, theft, etc.; give routine information to visitors and service recipients and direct them to the proper individuals and offices; discourage and eject loiterers and disorderly persons and when appropriate, arrest and issue summonses to law violators on premises; transport, escort and/or arrange for transport of persons in custody to police precincts and have arrests recorded on police blotter; prepare and transmit all necessary documents relating to arrests; testify in court on arrests; report security instances and unusual occurrences by telephone or radio and make subsequent written reports; as required, provide assistance to the sick, injured, mentally and physically disabled, and call for ambulances and/or medical attention when necessary and complete and forward forms; record daily actions in memo book; maintain records of persons entering or leaving building; keep bulletin board in their area current by adding and removing materials; may make clock rounds as required; may control vehicular traffic on grounds and/or premises; may operate a motor vehicle; monitor and report unusual events from security systems as required; distribute and maintain accountability for designated equipment or property; monitor and control access by the means of electronic security measures, such as closed circuit television; access control readers; may operate hydraulic access devices; attend, complete, and maintain training requirements as per State and Agency mandates; make written entries into location log book; and perform related work.

Special officer (NYC H+H)

Salary: $36,955

Job description: Special Officers (NYC H+H), under supervision, perform Special Officer (NYC H+H) work of ordinary difficulty and responsibility relating to physical security, safety, loss prevention and maintenance of order. Traffic enforcement agent

Salary: $36,045

Job description: At Assignment Level I, under supervision, Traffic Enforcement Agents patrol an assigned area in order to enforce laws, rules and regulations relating to movement, parking, stopping and standing of vehicles. They prepare and issue paper and electronic summonses for violations; prepare and issue summonses to vehicles and motorists; testify at administrative hearing offices and court; report inoperative or missing parking meters and traffic conditions requiring attention; prepare required reports; operate a motor vehicle; operate portable and vehicle radios and other electronic equipment; and perform related work.
